The Himalayas Art Museum Shanghai presents in its entirety the series “The Trilogy of the Moderns”, a work by the essayist Caroline Gaudriault and the photographer Gérard Rancinan. Selected to represent France within the framework of the 50th anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations, they propose a journey through an original scenography, delivering a hybrid commentary on the upheavals affecting the contemporary world.
A flagship event closing the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Franco-Chinese diplomatic relations, the exhibition will be opened on October 18 by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Laurent Fabius, and the Chinese government.
In the 5,000m² dedicated to the exhibition, Caroline Gaudriault and Gérard Rancinan play on the sheer size of this unique site to present, in four halls, the three sections of the series – Metamorphoses , Hypotheses and Wonderful World. Gérard Rancinan rises to the challenge of Chinese immensity: dominating the first, 800m² hall, his emblematic work, “The Raft of Illusions”, printed in a giant 9m x 13m format, inaugurates the journey. Thanks to its dimensions, it is the largest work of photography in the world.
On their journey through the exhibition halls, visitors experience the photographs of the Trilogy, most of them presented in a monumental format, including The Feast of the Barbarians, set against a backdrop as structured as it is pure. The itinerary is punctuated by hanging 10m scrolls, reminiscent of sacred texts calling the faithful to meditation. An invitation to the seven-year dialogue between Caroline Gaudriault and Gérard Rancinan informed by an analysis of a world anxiously in search of itself. « The Trilogy of the Moderns » is a global oeuvre in which the questions posed and the reflections developed in the texts resonate with the photographic images to produce a general understanding that makes of this art a political act.
The authors have, in this exhibition, worked with one of the leading names in Chinese calligraphy, the Beijing-based artist, Wei Ligang.
